The Godseeker Gang is a term coined by Bazon Brock in the 1990s that refers to the aesthetic against enforced immediacy. In this work, a group of three monkeys (the Trinity) head out (into space) with home-made helmets, decorative greenery, and great seriousness to discover some ultimate truths. The apple from the tree of knowledge was unripe.

Impasto applied with spatula and brush in alternating layers of glazing and opaque paint. The paint was scratched in parts while it was still wet, and it was further worked upon with pencil. In this way, objective details arise from abstract structures.

The BUDDHAMINDERS series began in the 2000s, since when it has passed through many stages of evolutionary development. The increasingly abstract form of the pre-human primate has reduced the motif, which we understand as a more instinctive human being, to its inner beauty by simply staying in the here and N-O-W. In a process based on the methods of classical sculpture, Sageder has developed objects that relate to the biblical motif of the loss of innocence. The pre-human primate, as the animal most similar to man, remains in a paradisiacal state after the Fall. Iris Sageder’s subjects emerge from the thematic circle: loss of innocence ability to learn recovery of innocence. Exploring this difference, she documents her works as an experiment in which form and materiality resonantly arouse the natural frequency of the unconscious movements of the soul.

THE MANY WAYS OF MILKY WAYS

In this work, the wolf, as a power animal, was integrated into the image of the primal mother with bulging breasts in front of an iridescent green background. Nature herself as a nursing Gaia. Romulus murdered Remus beyond all childishness. In the act of fighting with and killing his brother he became a muscular grown man. In the depiction chosen here, after the horrific act has taken place, he dreams of regaining the guilt-free status of a child. BEFORE paradise was lost. He drinks lying down. He sucks. He sips smooth white milk that flows through the ages like a river of stars. Milk becomes the carrier of his earliest unformed memory symbolized by the babys head as the center of emotion before the invention of good and evil.

The human being in the center of the triptych stands for the halfway point of evolution. The form of the egg can be interpreted as the external embodiment of an inherent potential.

A tower of babies pure potential from generations of individuals each of whom strived and stretched their way through the ages towards the future before becoming a pillar and foundation of the entire evolutionary development of our species. We climb upon our distant ancestor, who walks within us and wants to watch. Thanks, you many thousands.

For me, the horses body symbolizes the training of the form and thus, since they are inextricably linked, the dressage of the soul. I am constantly concerned with the question of how much of me is “me” and how much comes from conditioning or the others”. If many people are to live together as unproblematically as possible in a society, manipulative control processes are essential. Hence, they are part of our cultural identity. This is how we have all learned to be influenceable. It’s what we call the school of life. In my work with the motif of the horse, I often exaggerate and distort the form in a way that contradicts our biological laws and acquired beliefs and, thus, appears absolutely grotesque. The improbable twisting of the physical form can be understood as a metaphor for the absurd and often overambitious ways in which we distort the body to adjust to prevailing ideas of perfection. From a different perspective, the same figure metamorphoses from the grotesque into the fascinating possibility of improving oneself through practice. Of even doing so – in the shamanic sense – beyond the mere physical form. The surreal contortion can thus be seen as an act of liberation from the biological corset and our associated beliefs. THE PRESSURE OF THE SOUL or THE GROTESQUE AS LIBERATION.
